CHAPTER 3:

A young man stood in the room, dressed in dusty black pants, a black vest, and a white long sleeve shirt. He was clutching his dirt encrusted boot which she presumed contained a foot. He turned his eyes and stared at her.

She started to scream, but before the noise came out, he had managed to clamp one hand over her mouth and the other around her waist. She struggled to get free but he held her fast.

“Will you hush up?” he said, looking around to see if anyone was coming. She continued to struggle until she got her lips open. Closing her eyes, she bit down hard on the poor man’s hand.

He immediately let her go and yelped in pain.

“Why the hell did you do that?! I wasn’t gonna hurt you or anything! I just wanted you to shut up! Jesus, you know what they’ll do to me if they find me in here?” he chided at an angry Melanie.

“How dare you lay a hand on me! I am Henry Ravenswood’s daughter all have you know and I--”

“Honey, I wouldn’t care if you were the daughter of the King of England! You don’t go around bitin’ innocent fellows like a damn rattlesnake!”

“Don’t use such vulgar language in front of me! I should have you thrown out!”

“Well I’ll be leavin’ just as soon as I get what I came here for,” he said and turned towards a mahogany chest. He opened the drawer and Melanie gasped.

“You’re a burglar!”

“I ain’t a burglar, I just need some--”

“Help!” Melanie shouted, but this time the man didn’t try to silence her. Instead, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her. That did the trick far better than a simple hand.

“Now listen, I don’t want to hurt you, Miss. You’re mighty nice lookin’ and it’d be a damn shame to lose so much beauty over something as little as what I came for. Your Butler, Dobbins, stole something from me the other day, and I’m here to retrieve it. It’s taken me a damn long time to find his room and now that I’ve finally got what I wanted, I’m gonna leave. I haven’t stolen anythin’ from you or your father. I like Mr. Ravenswood a lot and I wouldn’t want to lose his respect which is why I can’t let you go tellin’ everybody I’m here. Now, I’m gonna put this here locket in my pocket and I’m gonna climb out the window in the hall, and I will never bother you again as long as I live, I swear.”

“What locket?”

“This one,” he said, pulling a silver chain with a heart pendant at the end out of the drawer.

“How do I know that’s really yours?”

“Come here and look at it. It should have a picture of a man and a woman on the inside right, and it should say ‘For Emma, my true love, signed Thomas Fletcher’ on the other side.”

Melanie cautiously walked over to the man and took the locket. The inside did, in fact, have a man and a woman posed for a picture on the right side, and the engraving he said on the other. Melanie suddenly blushed in embarrassment.

“I suppose you aren’t lying.”

“I suppose I’m not. This here was my mom’s. My Pa gave it to her on her weddin’ day, and that butler of yours thought he’d get a hefty sum for it. He also thought I wouldn’t notice it had gone missin’.”

“Please tell you mother and father I am very sorry.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Miss. They both died in an earthquake when I was ten.”

“Oh…please forgive me Mr…”

“Fletcher. Andrew Fletcher.”

“I am--”

“Melanie Ravenswood. Your father talks about you a whole lot ‘round here. It was nice meetin’ you Miss Ravenswood, and please don’t tell your father I was here. It might’ve been on respectable terms, but it still doesn’t look good.”

“You have my word I won’t Mr. Fletcher.”

“Thank you kindly, Miss Ravenswood. I’ll just be goin’ now,” he said and bowed shortly to here. The next thing she knew, he was in the hallway, climbing out the same window she had been staring at a few moments later.

She stood still in the hall until she heard Emily calling to her from the other end.

“Miss Ravenswood? Miss Ravenswood! Thank heavens I’ve found you! Your father has been looking everywhere for you! He wants you to come back to the party at once, the dance is about to start and there is a young gentleman he would like you to meet.”

Melanie obediently accompanied Emily back into the ballroom, chancing only one short glance back at the empty window.
